If there's one thing you can't ignore in Mérida, it's the heat... but you also can't ignore how much we love it. Because here, the sun not only warms your skin, it also warms your heart. And while sometimes we want to embrace the weather from an air-conditioned room, there are also many ways to enjoy it to the fullest. Here are some ideas and places to make you fall in love (even more) with the Yucatecan capital, even when the thermometer doesn't drop below 100°F.

1. A dip for the soul: cenotes and water parks

In times of extreme heat, cenotes are true oases. Cenote Xlacah, in Dzibilchaltún, is just a few minutes from the city and has the unique feature of being outdoors, surrounded by Mayan ruins. It's like swimming in pure history. If you're looking for something more fun and family-friendly, Baxal Ja in Xmatkuil is a giant water park with slides, pools, and green areas to spend the whole day laughing and splashing around. Perfect for taking the family, friends, or simply escaping the heat.

2. Rooftops and terraces that feel like a vacation

A nice terrace with a breeze, a cold drink, and a beautiful view cures everything. Picheta, opposite the Cathedral, has a rooftop with an unbeatable view of the Historic Center, ideal for going at sunset and cooling off with a cocktail. There is also Casa Chica on Paseo de Montejo, which has a cozy terrace, great music, and creative drinks. At both, the only thing that melts... is the ice in your glass.

3. Air-conditioned museums (with lots to see)

Mérida isn't just hot, it's also cultural. Take advantage of the museums to spend a few cool hours learning new things. The Museum of Light, inside the Palace of Music, is a multisensory experience that combines science, art, and technology, ideal for the whole family. Nearby is the Museum of Yucatecan Song, where you can learn about the history of bolero and trova music, which have given the region its identity. You'll leave with a happy heart... and without a drop of sweat.

4. Popsicles, frappés, and ice cream to survive

There are places that are like an icy hug for the soul. At Polita, you'll find artisanal popsicles in flavors such as soursop, tamarind with chili, or walnut with cajeta. If you're more into frappés and cold drinks, Marago Coffee in the Centro or Río de Janeiro Café in García Ginerés have shaded terraces and delicious options. Pro tip: order something with ice-cold horchata and thank the universe.

5. Nighttime strolls: when Mérida cools down (and romance heats up)

When the sun goes down, Mérida transforms. Stroll along Paseo de Montejo under the light of the street lamps, dine on a terrace, or take a look at the Cathedral's Videomapping, which is free and spectacular. You can also visit the Remate de Montejo, where there is music, urban art, ice cream, and a refreshing breeze.

What if the heat is an excuse to experience Mérida in a different way?

Sometimes we complain about the heat, but the truth is that it also pushes us to do different things: to seek shade under the ceiba trees, to savor a coconut champola, to swim in a cenote for the first time, or to linger longer at a cool table after a meal. Mérida is intense, yes, but it is also generous. So put on your hat, apply sunscreen, and go out and enjoy yourself. Because if the heat doesn't go away... you can always go for a swim, have some ice cream, or spend an afternoon at the museum.
